Matt Nelson

Matt Nelson is an American cellist, guitarist, and arranger. He started his freelance career along Florida’s Gulf Coast in 1999. He relocated to Nashville in 2006 and holds a Bachelor of Music from the Middle Tennessee State University. His creative character is a tasteful amalgamation of proper classical training and improvisational pop sensibility.

In 2009–2010, he toured extensively as the sole sideman for Michael Card. In 2011–2013, he played guitar and cello on The Story Tour, a highly acclaimed Christmas spectacular featuring some of the most prominent names in Christian music, including Steven Curtis Chapman, Newsboys, Natalie Grant, Casting Crowns, and Jeremy Camp. Between high profile tours, he keeps busy with Nashville’s vibrant indie pop scene. Other recent performing highlights include guitar, cello, and vocals with Brynn Marie on support dates for rock legends Pat Benatar, Cheap Trick, and Heart. He has also performed often with CCM favorite Nichole Nordeman.

Most recently, he played cello and bass with Jars of Clay for the band’s recent tours of the US, Canada, the Philippines, and Europe. He is currently the touring guitarist and cellist for spunky country selfie queen RaeLynn, including appearances on NBC’s Today and support dates on Miranda Lambert’s Platinum Tour and Rascal Flatts’ Riot Tour.

Matt Nelson lives in Nashville, Tennessee.
